Faith is the essence of human life and the spirit that gives it meaning and purpose. It is the relationship that connects a person to their Creator, a bond that instills tranquility in hearts and illuminates paths. In a time filled with distractions and a life crowded with materialism, deepening one's knowledge of God Almighty becomes a necessity that renews faith and strengthens its roots.
Faith is that profound feeling of certainty in the existence of God Almighty and in what He has brought through His messengers and scriptures. It is the belief in the unseen, the hope in the hereafter, and obedience to God and His Messenger. Faith is not merely a theoretical belief; it is a deep heart state that affects all aspects of a person's life.
Faith holds immense importance in the life of both the individual and society, as it is the foundation upon which happiness and tranquility are built. Here are some fruits of faith in God:
Psychological stability: Faith gives a person a sense of tranquility and security, as they know there is a higher power protecting and guiding them.
Happiness and contentment: A believer lives a happy and content life because they see the blessings that God has bestowed upon them and rely on Him in times of hardship.
Hope for the future: Belief in the hereafter gives a person great hope in life and motivates them to do good deeds.
Adopting virtuous morals: Faith drives a person to embody virtuous morals such as patience, gratitude, justice, and kindness.
Building a strong community: Communities built on the foundation of faith are more cohesive and united, characterized by justice and equality.
To strengthen your faith, there are steps you should follow to increase your faith, and as your faith grows, you will come to know God more and recognize Him as He truly is, leading to greater reverence for Him. Among these steps, we mention the following:
Step One: Contemplation of the Signs of the Universe and Nature
God created the universe with unparalleled precision and creativity, and placed in it signs that indicate His greatness. The starry sky, the shining sun, and the earth overflowing with goodness are all witnesses to the existence and power of God. Through contemplation of these signs, the heart expands to see the beauty of creation that leads to a great Creator. Allah, the Almighty, said: “Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for those of understanding” [Al-Imran: 190].
Contemplating the signs of the universe and nature is an enjoyable and fruitful journey that brings us closer to our Creator, encouraging us to reflect on God's creation, admire His wisdom, and feel reverence and awe for Him. It also increases our faith in God, makes us realize our smallness before His greatness, and calls us to gratitude and praise for His countless blessings. Contemplation of the universe inspires us to be creative and innovative, broadens our horizons of thought, and drives us to seek knowledge. Additionally, it helps us understand ourselves and our relationship with the universe, granting us a sense of peace and tranquility.
Step Two: Contemplation of the Holy Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah
The Holy Quran is the word of God revealed to His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and it is the greatest means to know God and His attributes. Contemplating its verses and reflecting on their meanings opens the doors to a deeper understanding of God's wisdom and mercy. Likewise, the Prophetic Sunnah, which embodies the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as a practical role model, teaches us how to worship and obey God.
Contemplating the Quran and Sunnah is the key to a deep understanding of the religion. In the Holy Quran, we find treasures of wisdom and guidance, and in the Prophetic Sunnah, we find the practical application of these rulings. When we contemplate the verses of the Holy Quran and listen to the sayings and biography of the Prophet (peace be upon him), we discover treasures of knowledge and wisdom that nourish our souls and enlighten our hearts; indeed, contemplation is not merely reading, but a deep reflection on the meanings and purpose of these words and actions; through it, we reach a deeper understanding of Islam and are able to apply its teachings in our daily lives.
Step Three: Recognizing the Names and Attributes of God
The beautiful names of God are the key to deeply knowing Him. Each of His names carries a unique meaning that reflects His perfect attributes. When we contemplate names like the Forgiving, the Merciful, and the All-Knowing, we feel God's closeness to us and His love for His servants. This contemplation drives us to apply the meanings of the names in our daily lives.
Recognizing the names and attributes of God is a ladder leading to the knowledge of the Almighty. The beautiful names of God are an inexhaustible treasure, and each name opens a new door to understanding God's knowledge and attributes. When we reflect on these names, we discover the greatness of God and His power, and our faith and love for Him increase. Contemplating these names allows us to see God's beauty in everything around us and motivates us to draw closer to Him and obey Him. Each of the beautiful names of God carries profound implications regarding His attributes, and reflecting on these implications increases our faith and certainty.
Step Four: The Power of Prayer and Connection with God
Prayer is the weapon of the believer, and it is the closest a servant can be to their Lord. It is the link between the Creator and the created, a means of expressing needs, hopes, and sorrows. Allah says: "And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me" [Al-Baqarah: 186]. Through prayer, we learn to rely on Allah and submit to His wisdom. When we pray to Allah, we acknowledge our weakness and need for Him, and we trust in His mercy and generosity. Prayer is not just a request; it is a belief that Allah is capable of everything, and that His response to our prayers is a matter of time. The power of prayer lies in the faith of the supplicant; the stronger their faith, the more powerful their prayer and its response.
Step Five: Patience and Certainty in Facing Trials
Life is full of challenges and trials, and they are part of the test of faith, with patience and certainty that Allah does not test except for wisdom. Through this test, our spiritual strength increases, and we draw closer to Allah. Trials make us realize that Allah is the only refuge, and that His mercy is vast. Patience and certainty are the strong weapons of the believer in facing the fluctuations and trials of life. When a trial befalls them, patience acts as a shield protecting them from despair, and certainty is a lamp illuminating their path to the future. The patient ones are those who rise to the highest ranks and draw nearer to their Lord. Through patience, the believer endures what Allah has tested them with, and through certainty, they trust that Allah will reward the patient with goodness. Patience is not just passive waiting; it is a positive action that requires strong faith and steadfast determination. Certainty is a firm trust that Allah does not waste the reward of those who do good deeds. Whoever is patient and seeks the reward, and trusts in their Lord, Allah will compensate them with goodness in this world and the Hereafter, and will grant them victory and relief.
Step Six: Good Companionship and Its Role in Strengthening Faith
A person is influenced by those around them, so choosing good companionship is one of the most important means to strengthen faith. Friends who remind us of God and encourage us to obey Him are a great blessing. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "A person is on the religion of his close friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends" [Reported by Abu Dawood].
Good companionship is an everlasting treasure and a beneficial remedy for every ailment. A good friend is like a mirror that reflects our image; if the image is beautiful, it encourages us to maintain it, and if the image is ugly, it pushes us to change. Good companionship drives us toward goodness and keeps us away from evil; it reminds us of God and urges us to obey Him. A good friend is like a fire that ignites hearts with faith and love for God, and like rain that quenches the hearts' thirst for knowledge and guidance. One of the reasons for the strength and endurance of faith is choosing a good companion who will assist us in this world and the Hereafter.
The Seventh Step: Spreading Goodness and Serving Others
Righteous deeds are not just a means of earning reward, but also a path to deepening faith. When we help others and spread goodness, we feel the pleasure of God and see the impact of faith in our lives and the lives of those around us. Doing good to people is a manifestation of practical faith.
Spreading goodness and serving others is the foundation of the Islamic religion, and it is the path to people's hearts and souls; for Islam is a religion of mercy and justice, and it calls its followers to be a good example in society, and to strive to spread goodness everywhere. Serving others is not just a voluntary act, but it is an act of worship through which we draw closer to God Almighty, and by which we earn reward and recompense in this world and the Hereafter. The true Muslim is the one who is keen to help the needy, bring joy to the poor, and provide assistance to everyone who needs it. Among the noblest forms of goodness is to smile in the face of our brother, to speak to him with kind words, and to help the needy with money or effort. Islam calls us to be the best nation brought forth for humanity, and to work to spread peace and love among people.
To simplify the concept of this article, the bottom line is that the journey of faith is not a station we arrive at, but rather a continuous path that requires constant renewal; our relationship with God needs ongoing nourishment through worship, reflection, and good deeds to deepen our knowledge of Him and strengthen our bond with Him, for He is the ultimate goal. Allah Almighty said: "And worship your Lord until certainty comes to you." [Al-Hijr: 99].
The journey of faith is an endless journey, but a continuous striving for perfection. The believer always seeks to increase and strengthen their faith, and to know Allah more and more. Faith is like a plant that requires continuous care to grow and bear fruit; likewise, faith needs attention and care to increase and strengthen. The believer does not cease to seek religious knowledge, reflect on God's creation, perform acts of worship, and gather with the righteous. This journey is enjoyable and full of blessings, and it is the only journey that brings true happiness and tranquility to a person in this world and the Hereafter.
