How Do We Confront the Envious Demon?

Envious Demon

Pause for a moment and think…
Have you ever gone through a period in your life where you felt an unexplained fatigue, a tightness in your chest, and a drop in your energy, even though you had no apparent illness? You might sleep for long hours, yet wake up as if you hadn’t slept at all. Or you may find yourself quick to anger, moody, and unsettled without any clear reason.

These symptoms may lead you to believe it’s purely a physical or psychological problem, but in reality, there could be a hidden enemy you cannot see with your eyes—the devil of envy (hasad).

This enemy works in the shadows, feeding off feelings of jealousy and the arrows of the evil eye that strike you from others. Then, it begins to spread its negative energy into your body and soul, weakening you, distracting you from your goals, and isolating you from your normal life. And just as this enemy has tools and methods to fight you, it’s essential that you also possess counter-weapons—spiritual and mental shields—that protect you, repel it, and prevent it from taking control of your life. On your journey to confronting the devil of envy, there are key points you must keep in mind. These are not just steps, but strong barriers between you and its harm.

Make treating spiritual ailments a priority

One of the biggest mistakes many people make is treating spiritual symptoms as something secondary that can be postponed. They get caught up in life’s distractions and delay treatment until their condition worsens. You must understand that spiritual diseases—foremost among them envy—if left unaddressed, will take root in both body and soul, making them harder to remove.

If you notice recurring symptoms that have no medical explanation—such as chronic headaches, sudden fatigue, shortness of breath, or disturbed sleep—don’t settle for medication or medical tests alone. Make protection and ruqyah (spiritual healing) a priority. Beginning spiritual treatment early can save you months or even years of suffering and help you regain your balance quickly.

Draw closer to Allah Almighty

Closeness to Allah is the greatest fortress that protects you from all harm. Make performing your prayers on time your highest priority. Do not neglect voluntary prayers, and set aside a daily time to stand before Allah in the stillness of the night in qiyam al-layl, when calmness and pure connection fill your heart.

Every step you take toward your Lord pushes away the hand of envy and opens a door of tranquility that the devil cannot close. Remember that closeness to Allah is not only through acts of worship, but also by avoiding sins, watching over your heart and intentions, and striving to live in Allah’s pleasure. Sins open cracks through which envy and the devil can easily enter.

Hold firmly to the weapon of supplication (duʿaʾ)

Supplication is the strongest tool a believer has—it requires no mediator and no cost, only a heart certain of Allah’s response. When you raise your hands and say: “O Allah, protect me from the harm of the envious”, you are declaring that you are under the protection of the One whom nothing can overpower.

Repeat morning and evening supplications of protection, and dedicate daily time to making duʿaʾ for yourself and your family. Even if you feel there’s no immediate change, know that its effect accumulates over time and shields you from unseen harm that was heading your way.

Increase your remembrance of Allah (dhikr)

Constant remembrance drives away devils and weakens their power, bringing light and serenity back to your soul. Be diligent in reciting the full morning and evening adhkar, and repeat subhanAllah, alhamdulillah, la ilaha illa Allah, and la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah throughout your day—especially in moments of idleness or while working.

Remember, the devil cannot bear hearing the remembrance of Allah. Every word of dhikr you utter is like an arrow striking it and weakening it. With persistence, you’ll find yourself calmer, more balanced, and better equipped to handle life’s challenges, as your heart will be filled with Allah’s remembrance.

Be consistent in reading the Qur’an

The Qur’an is the ultimate cure for every spiritual disease. The Prophet ﷺ told us that the devil flees from a house in which Surah al-Baqarah is recited. Set for yourself a fixed daily portion of Qur’an—don’t rush through it, but read with reflection and humility.

Dedicate time to reading surahs known for their benefit in ruqyah, such as al-Baqarah, ar-Rahman, and al-Jinn, along with the Muʿawwidhat (last three chapters). Over time, you’ll sense that your home feels calmer and your soul stronger in resisting envy and its symptoms.

Seek the help of cupping therapy (hijama)

Hijama is not only a physical treatment but also an effective method for easing the effects of envy and other spiritual ailments—especially when there are accompanying physical symptoms like headaches, joint pain, or overall fatigue.

The Prophet ﷺ recommended it, and modern science has proven its benefits in improving blood circulation and removing toxins. If your condition requires it, make hijama part of your healing program, but only with a qualified practitioner.

Learn the art of ruqyah

Do not always rely on others to perform ruqyah for you—learn how to do it yourself. Memorize the verses and supplications used in ruqyah, and practice reciting them aloud with certainty that healing comes only from Allah.

When you have this skill, you save time and money, and you are always ready to face any sudden symptoms without waiting for an appointment with a healer or feeling powerless.

Persevere until victory

The battle against envy and the devil is not short-term—it requires patience and persistence. At times, you may feel improvement only to have some symptoms return, but don’t let that discourage you from continuing your protection and treatment.

Consistency in these steps will strengthen your spiritual resilience day after day, until a time comes when you look back and realize that what once weighed heavily on your heart and clouded your life has become nothing but a distant memory.
